BAL (Bushfire Attack Level)

The rating that measures a building's potential exposure to bushfire, from BAL-LOW to BAL-FZ.

Bushfire Attack Level is the measure of a site's potential exposure to bushfire attack, set under AS 3959. The levels run BAL-LOW, BAL-12.5, BAL-19, BAL-29, BAL-40 and BAL-FZ (Flame Zone), reflecting increasing radiant heat, ember and flame exposure.

Your BAL determines the construction requirements for the building, including limits on combustible materials. A non-combustible substrate like aluminium is a useful starting point on BAL-rated land, though final compliance always depends on the complete wall system.
