Finish colour does not just set the look - on sun-exposed walls it affects heat. Here is how to choose with orientation in mind.
UV stability vs heat gain
Our finishes are engineered to be UV-stable, so fade is not the worry it is with oiled timber. The factor to weigh on hot elevations is heat gain: darker colours absorb more solar heat than lighter ones.
North and west walls
In most of Australia, north and west elevations cop the strongest, hottest sun. On large expanses facing these directions, a mid or lighter woodgrain can be the more comfortable choice, particularly in hot climates.
Where dark finishes shine
Darker finishes like Wenge, Smoked Oak and Walnut look spectacular and are perfectly suitable on shaded, south-facing or smaller feature areas, and in cooler climates where heat gain is less of a concern.
Detailing helps too
A ventilated cavity behind the cladding, eaves and shading all reduce heat reaching the interior, which gives you more freedom with colour on exposed walls.
